Ford’s ‘Advanced Vehicle Operations’ (A.V.O.) facility in Aveley Essex was a ‘specialist’ factory which built the Escort RS1600, RS Mexico, RS 2000 and Escort 1300 Sport, all of which used the heavy duty Type-49 bodyshell. The first A.V.O. built car, an Escort RS1600, was driven off the line by Graham Hill on the 2nd November 1970, but by early 1975 A.V.O. had closed because Ford had integrated assembly of its specialist models back into their mainstream facilities.
The RS2000 modelled here was produced in black and was supplied to its first owner, Christopher Rowe, in December 1974 by W. Harold Perry Ltd of Middlesex. However, the colour was changed to another original RS2000 hue, Vista Orange, in the mid-nineties by Clive Neasham, an enthusiast from the North of England who restored the car using a genuine Type-49 Ford Motor Sport Service bodyshell; the AVO plate still reads ‘primer’ where the factory colour is usually stated. It subsequently passed, via intermediaries, to current owner Scott Slavin from Cornwall who has uprated the car, boring and stroking the Pinto engine to 2.2-litres and 185bhp. Scott is a volunteer administrator of the successful oldskoolford.co.uk members’ forum.
