The popular view of the Derby Manchester route is that of a secondary line which allowed the Midland Railway to operate through expresses between London, St Pancras, and Manchester Central: an important passenger artery but unquestionably subordinate to the LNWR and its Euston Manchester London Rd operations. The level of activity at locations such as Rowsley, Gowhole and Peak Forest not to mention Manchester and Chinley was almost unparalleled but it is all shown in this book which not only describes hour by hour a typical days\' operations during the 1950\'s but includes the complete 1955 working timetable for goods and passenger trains, the allocation of engines in the district between 1950 and 1960 and a wealth of operating data much of which has never previously been published for the Peak District mainlines.
