Until the opening of the new Woodhead Tunnel in June 1954, the summit of the Great Central's Manchester to Sheffield line fell just past milepost 22 - calibrated from Manchester London Road -from where the alignment had risen almost continuously. This constantly ascending grade coincided with the exit from the notorious Woodhead Tunnel. From the mouth of the tunnel through Dunford Bridge, the gradient fell at 1 in 135 to Hazelhead, then at 1 in 124/130 towards Bullhouse and Penistone. Through Huddersfield Junction at 1 in 100 to Barnsley Junction, where the lines to Barnsley and Wath ran off eastwards; the railway of the Victorian pioneers fell on a continuous down grade through the lesser tunnel at Thurgoland, Wortley, Deepcar, Oughty Bridge and Wadsley Bridge and on towards the centre of Britain's one-time premier steel-making city, Sheffield.
